We host a Christmas celebration for my husband’s side of the family every year, and have made a tradition of having a Mexican food potluck, presents for the kids, and a game of Dirty Santa for the adults. However, a couple of years ago, my husband and I decided we wanted to try something new at our Christmas party…
A few months earlier, I had the privilege to participate in a lock-in with the girls of our church youth group. It was at this lock-in that I discovered YouTube karaoke videos! We had so much fun singing along to TobyMac 😍 and other great artists, and I decided then that this would be a great activity for the family!
To view the karaoke videos on our TV, we created a playlist and accessed it through the YouTube app on our Amazon Fire TV Stick. We also bought a microphone that would plug into our sound bar, because it’s so much more fun to belt out tunes into a microphone!
**There are so many great apps available on the Amazon Fire TV Stick! You can save a lot of money by watching TV shows and movies through apps rather than pay for a cable subscription! We watch live TV (even sports channels!) through the Sling TV app. (Try Sling TV free for 7 days! Cable channels without the cable price, starting at $20 a month and no contract!) We also watch on demand TV shows and movies through Amazon Prime Videos. I highly recommend going this route if you are looking to cut some costs! Our daughter loved our karaoke nights so much that we bought her a karaoke machine for her next birthday! She (and the boys) use it as a portable microphone, carrying it around the house while belting out VBS songs!
If you are looking to have your own karaoke party, check out the YouTube channels listed below!
1. The KARAOKE channel
The KARAOKE Channel is the best Karaoke channel that I have found. It has the largest number of videos and many organized topical playlists. I love the organization of it! The music in the videos is high quality and the words light up in time to the music.
This video is an example of what the karaoke videos from this channel are like…and though I don’t think my kids have heard this song, I’m pretty sure they would find it hilarious!
Yellow Submarine (The Beatles)
2. Sing King Karaoke
Sing King Karaoke also has high quality videos. This channel does not have as many playlists, but it does have several Disney songs! Check out this example :
I Just Can’t Wait to Be King (Lion King)
The videos from the Karafun channel are a bit different from the other two listed above. Unlike those channels, you can very faintly hear the lead vocals in the background. Nothing your own voice wouldn’t cover, and it may help out with your timing! The background video is very colorful, and I believe this channel has the most Disney karaoke videos!
Unfortunately this channel does not allow video embedding, so here is a link to a video I think your kids would enjoy – Happy Birthday! (Rock version)
My advice would be to search the above channels and create a playlist of your own before starting your karaoke party. There are so many videos available that you could spend more time deciding on the song to sing than the time spent singing! I am sharing, below, two playlists that I created to use on family nights. All songs are family friendly for little ears! 😁
“Let it go! Let it go!” These lines will again be stuck in your head, along with many other new and classic Disney songs, if you check out this Disney Karaoke playlist! This playlist includes Disney videos from multiple karaoke channels.
Let It Go (Frozen)
I’ve included my family’s favorite Christmas songs in this Christmas Karaoke playlist! This playlist is for you if you love classic Christmas songs like White Christmas, Let it Snow, Jingle Bell Rock, I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas… 😆 That last one is a favorite of my kids’! (Fun fact – Gayla Peevey, the then ten year old girl who originally sang this song, was from Oklahoma! According to Wikipedia, the Oklahoma City Zoo used her song in a successful fundraising campaign to “buy a hippo for Gayla”, which she then donated back to the zoo!)
