My 8 year old daughter loves art. She loves to draw, and if I say so myself, she’s pretty artistic. I would love for her to have an opportunity to learn technique and grow in her abilities. However, I have no artistic background, and art is not focused on at her school. Though there are some great summer art camps available near us, these camps are also pretty pricey. So, I was intrigued when a friend mentioned checking out YouTube for art tutorials.
I scoured YouTube to find videos for my budding artist: Videos that would be challenging but not overwhelming. I am so excited to share with you the 5 channels I found! Some of the channels listed below have playlists for younger children as well!
1. Createful Kids
Ashley Kreiger of the Createful Kids Channel teaches step by step painting and drawing lessons with her two young children. With her children painting alongside her, you get a great idea of the degree of difficulty for your own child. This channel has a dozen guided painting lessons and over 40 drawing lessons. As an example, here is her tutorial for how to paint a cupcake:

Another thing I love about the Createful Kids Channel is the playlist of art history lessons. In these short lessons, you learn about a famous artist and create art inspired by their works! Some of the famous artists that she teaches about include Leonardo, Michelangelo and Raphael. (My son would tell me she’s missing Donatello! 🙂 )
They paint cherubs in the Raphael lesson, and make soap sculptures in the lesson about Michelangelo! My kids would love this!
2. Angela Anderson
Angela Anderson has an amazing art tutorial channel. It is full of painting tutorials for Easy Beginner to Advanced artists. She also live streams a painting tutorial twice a week!
Her playlist, Art Lessons for Kids and Families, includes 22 “easy” and “beginner” tutorials. This “Rainbow Button Tree” acrylic painting tutorial is my favorite! It is very cute, can be easily personalized by your child, and looks pretty simple!

There are a few other paintings that I would let my 5 year old attempt along with me, but most of the tutorials in this playlist are geared toward older children.

3. The Art Sherpa
Cinnamon Clooney teaches easy to advanced beginner acrylic painting lessons on her channel, The Art Sherpa. (She has a few watercolor painting tutorials as well.) Her playlist, The Art Sherpa for Kids, includes more than 60 painting tutorials geared toward older children. There are also a handful of tutorials that could be adapted for younger children that incorporate cotton swabs and toilet paper rolls! Her Marigold Flower tutorial is one of these:

4. How to Draw and Paint
If your child loves to draw, you must check out the Channel, How to Draw and Paint. You will find easy step-by-step tutorials for drawing emojis, animals, cartoon characters, and more! Emojis are the in thing right now at our elementary school.

5. Art for Kids Hub
The Art for Kids Hub channel is another great channel for step-by-step instruction for drawing, painting, and origami! Like the Createful Kids Channel, the tutorials are a family affair. There is also a specific playlist for children 5 and under!
Here is an example from the 5 and under playlist of how to draw a dinosaur using shapes:
